Getting the Most Out of Your Used Cisco Equipment 0

Has your company recently upgraded your Cisco network routers, ethernet switches, wireless access points or IP telephones?  Cisco equipment that has gone through its first lifecycle often retains market value post de-installation.  Cisco Systems is a global leader in IT infrastructure technology, and like any top-tier brand, their products retain value even after they are used.

Cisco routers often need to be upgraded to support a business’ need for additional bandwidth or throughput.  Cisco switches may be displaced as a business’ needs shift from traditional 100MB switching to Gigabit or 10 Gigabit.  Cisco wireless G networks are currently being upgraded to support the new IEEE 802.11N wireless standard.  Cisco IP phones are upgraded to support Gigabit ethernet throughput, color displays, additional line appearances and business process integration.

All of these products maintain a portion of their original acquisition cost even after they are no longer up to spec for your own current business needs.  Selling your Used Cisco Equipment is a great way to partially offset the cost of your network infrastructure upgrades.  Many vendors and Cisco resellers also offer trade-in credit toward the purchase of newer Cisco hardware.

If you are considering selling your used or excess Cisco equipment, here are a few things to remember.

1 – Document an accurate inventory of what you have.  Record Cisco part #’s, serials #’s, as well as any additional software licenses, hardware interfaces and modules that may be installed in your Cisco routers, switches and other products.

2 – Take photos of your inventory.  If your used Cisco products are still in good physical and cosmetic condition, some photos will showcase their condition and add value for any potential purchaser.

3 – Research the current market value of your equipment.

4 – Work with a qualified buyer.  There are thousands of companies and individuals who purchase Used Cisco Equipment, some more reputable than others.  Don’t be afraid to ask for client references.

In summary, be aware that your Used Cisco Equipment is likely still worth a great deal of money even after you have upgraded. Rather than recycling it or paying someone to haul it off to a landfill, consider selling it to a qualified secondary market IT reseller.
