I meant to upload this in time for Election Day yesterday, when the entire McFarland family got out the vote, making variously timed trips to our local Hickr’y Pit not for waffles or pie but to participate in the democratic process. I hardly voted for anyone (Pete Camejo for Governor!), but went in for both statewide measures and (like the rest of the county) against the sales tax increase. Santa Clara County is already the best at a lot of things, we don’t need the highest sales tax.
Incidentally, voting around 1:00, I was the first Green all day at my polling place, and it sparked an interesting discussion with the three poll workers there about third parties, Camejo, voter turnout, and the local political climate. I love voting!
I love the diversity here.
Are all of the third-party people given the same ballot? Or do they just jam it into one sample?
I was an enthusiastic supporter of Nader in 2000 when he came to my school and gave a talk. He just made so much sense… but when it was coming down to the wire, I found myself getting angrier and angrier. At him some, but mostly at the system that made me say "I like your ideas, but I have to vote for this other cardboardy guy because he actually has a chance of winning and he’s much better than the other guy. For a while after the election, I was trying to get all of my friends excited about instant runoff voting (which we used in college for every election, so it just made sense).
Voting fun.
Plus you get to wear that fashionable sticker all day (though I felt kind of blech-y when they first came out with those "I Voted TOUCHSCREEN!" stickers).
